Creating an illustration series to benefit vulnerable communities in the Philippines
ROLE: Contributing Artist
This three-piece illustration series was done in collaboration with fundraising initiative Hawakan. Led by Filipino creatives from around Canada, the US, and the Philippines, the team organized an exhibit of works from a collective of 21 artists. The exhibit ran for a month both in a physical gallery space with by-appointment-only viewings and online in virtual reality, in conjuncture with an online auction. All proceeds benefited various charitable organizations in the Philippines, particularly those impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hawakan’s goal is to “fill a void through hope within art, culture, and belief for the future generation.” The series I developed centered around Filipino youth, each piece depicting my school-age siblings during our favorite pandemic routine: nightly reading sessions. Proceeds benefited the Philippine contingent of the world’s leading independent charity organization for children, Save the Children, specifically in their collaborative efforts with the Philippine Department of Education to improve access to remote education and develop adaptive learning methods for school children in impoverished communities in Metro Manila.
